The unevenly glazed windows overlooked the ever busy Seventh Street. Sue stood in
front of the window partially turned toward me. I remember walking into that second story boarding
house room, also known as Ivy Hall. I had started that day brand new at San Jose State,
with a mixture of excitement and anxiety. I met my new roommate, Sue Pfarrer, a tall intellectual
looking young woman, who would prove to be a delight. Years later, with Sue in Maine and me
in California, we still keep in touch.
It's intriguing how she shaped and molded who I am today. She caught me in a malleable
time when I was reshaping myself. She loved to pun. You know, the old play on words routine.
Ah yes, the lowest form of humor. Sue introduced me to this humorous mind game, and it was also
Sue who engaged me in daily rounds of who can figure the last pun to add to the lengthening list
on a given topic?
Years later, another very important person in my life, my husband, coined the term, "Top Pun"
as a play on the movie and Paramount's Great America Amusement Park ride. You see, I had gotten
him hooked, too. The contagion has lasted the 35 years of our marriage. The name has been solidified
on a vanity plate on my black Passat. Most people "get it", and some even smile. Thank goodness
I met Sue Pfarrer, and the creator of "Top Pun," my husband, Russ.
